GUEST BLOG POST: The Art Of Creativity — Taika Waititi
Editor’s Note: The insight which
Taika Waititi discusses brings to fore the creativity tips from the perspective
of an artist and filmmaker. He discusses how creativity has helped him express his ideas and led him to where he is.
Taika
Waititi is a visual artist, actor, writer and director, hailing from the
Raukokore region of New Zealand. His short film Two Cars, One Night was nominated for an Academy Award in 2005.
Taika's second and 2010 feature, Boy,
appeared at the Sundance and Berlin Film Festivals, premiered at the Sundance
Film Festival in January 2010 and was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize. On
its release in New Zealand, it received top reviews and was successful at the
box office, eclipsing several records. After the success of Boy, Waititi tried
to get the film's signature track "Poi E" to become number one (for
the second time) on the New Zealand charts. Although his efforts succeeded in
getting the track to number one on iTunes and number three on the New Zealand
charts, it missed out on the top spot on the New Zealand charts.
In
2011, Waititi's TV series Super City hit New Zealand television screens
starring Madeleine Sami, who plays five characters living in one city.
In 2013, Waititi
co-directed the New Zealand-based vampire comedy Mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows with friend
and fellow comedian Jermaine Clement. The film premiered at the Sundance Film
Festival in January 2014.
